Lincoln Memorial Donation

The budget for the Waterfront Park memorial honoring Abraham Lincoln, designed by noted Louisville sculptor Ed Hamilton, has received a $200,000 pledge from a Louisville family.

Meanwhile, work at the site just downriver from the Big Four Bridge is well under way, with a rescheduled dedication now set for June 4, 2009.

The 2006 General Assembly authorized $2 million for the memorial, which is being overseen by the Waterfront Development Corp.

To complete the project, about $350,000 more is needed, according to David Karem, executive director of the agency.

Marlene Grissom, a waterfront fundraiser, said yesterday that the family of the late businessman Harry Frazier has pledged $200,000 to the memorial. Karem said requests for the rest of the needed money are pending and that "the prospects are very good" for raising all the funds.

Clinton Deckard, the waterfront agency's project manager, said granite is the main item that has driven the project cost beyond $2 million.

He said the granite alone, which is being provided by a Minnesota company, will cost about $950,000.

Other major items include Hamilton's fee of $400,000, including payment for all his materials. T&C Contracting Inc. of Louisville has started work on paving and other site work, expected to cost about $480,000.

Other costs include lighting, landscaping and irrigation systems.
