Patrol Car
Changes
05/12/08 MRC/AP
Some
Evansville police officers will lose their take home
patrol cars and others will pay more than the previous
twice monthly rate for having one.
Assistant
Police Chief Rob Hahn said the change comes amid rising
fuel costs that have pushed the department toward being
over budget by year's end.
The new
policy begins on May 23rd and more than doubles the rate
officers with take home vehicles within city limits pay to
$25. Officers with take home vehicles elsewhere in
Vanderburgh County will pay $35 each pay period. Officers
who live outside Vanderburgh County will no longer be
allowed to have take home cruisers.
Police
officials say 186 officers in the department have take
home vehicles. That number will decrease by at least 11
but could dwindle more because officers will be allowed to
opt out of the program.
