University Renders Financial Aid
07/24/10 MRC/AP

The University of Louisville has awarded more than 500 students grants of $1,900 to make up for grants that weren't covered by Kentucky's College Access Program.

The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority notified 16,599 students statewide in the spring that the program had used up its funds and would only be able to grant money to students who applied by March 7, 2010, even though the application deadline was March 15.

University executive director of student financial aid Patricia Arauz said 536 students received help, at a cost of more than $1 million. Arauz said the funds came from new university money allocated for financial aid and with some financial aid money left over from this past school year as the result of a change in the federal Pell Grant program.
