UK First Generation Student Aid
07/25/10 MRC/AP
The University of Kentucky has a new program that will help first-generation college students earn a bachelor's degree.
A $1.1 million grant will be used in part to help first-generation students, who are first in their family to attend college. The grant comes from the Suder Foundation, a Texas-based organization set up for just those students.
UK President Lee Todd says the Suder Scholars program will "open the doors of opportunity to young people" across the state.
The first group of 20 will start at UK this fall. The grant will pay for another group of 20 scholars in the fall of 2011.
UK officials say 292 students applied for the program this year.
