WKU Rejects Shooting Range
07/26/10 MRC/AP

Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell says the school won't participate in plans to build a shooting range at Shanty Hollow Lake.

Ransdell says the shooting range goes against the school's commitment to sustainability. The university owns 19 acres in the undeveloped area that is popular for outdoor pursuits like hiking, canoeing and kayaking.

Amy Cardwell, sports marketing director for the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said supporters of the shooting range will continue their work to build one even without Western Kentucky University's support. Supporters estimate the shooting and archery facility would cost between $20 million and $50 million.

Ransdell says a shooting range is also not a priority with all the academic needs the university has.
