Pilot Injured In Crash
07/28/10 MRC/AP

Police say a Kentucky man was hurt when his experimental aircraft crashed near Perry County Municipal Airport in southern Indiana.

Police reported that 69-year-old pilot Charles Lunceford of Lewisport was able to crawl from the wreckage of his Sparrow Hawk II gyro-copter Tuesday and was alert when emergency workers arrived. He suffered burns to his lower extremities, arms and face and was flown to the University of Louisville Medical Center for treatment.

State police Sgt. Chad Dick says witnesses told investigators the aircraft appeared to be coming in for a landing at the airport near Tell City when it lost power, crashed and caught fire. The crash occurred within a half mile of the airport about 40 miles east of Evansville.

Dick says federal authorities will investigate.
