Saturday Mail Service Could Be Cut

Postmaster General John Potter is also expected to raise the possibility of higher rates to stave off massive financial losses.

The agency was $297 million in the red in the fourth quarter, usually its best season because of holiday mailings. The problems are blamed on a sharp drop in mail, caused by the recession and increased electronic communications.

The postal service handled 177 billion items last year, down from 213 billion in 2006. The agency does not get taxpayer money for its operations, and officials see little chance of Congress approving such a payment.
