Consumers Protest Rate Hikes
03/08/10 MRC/AP
The Public Service Commission plans to hold a series of public forums on rate increases proposed by LG&E and Kentucky Utilities.
According to Commission spokesman Andrew Melnykovych, the meetings will be held in April and May and a formal hearing will be held in Frankfort on June 8th.
Melnykovych says utility regulators have gotten about 75 letters and e-mails opposing LG&E's proposal to hike electric rates by 12 percent and gas rates by nearly 9 percent in part to cover repairs from two historic storms and replace older gas mains.
He says nearly 100 written protests have been received over Kentucky Utilities' request to increase residential electric rates by nearly 14 percent in part to cover repairs from storms and to help build a new electric generating plant.
