Mother Charged In Baby’s Death
03/09/10 MRC/AP

Kentucky State Police say the mother of a newborn whose body was found in the trash at a state prison is facing a murder charge.

Police said in a statement that 20-year-old Ashley N. Cox's baby was "alive and healthy when born." The body was found Sunday at Roederer Correctional Complex, a men's prison in La Grange.

State police say Cox was also charged with concealing the birth of an infant. She was arrested Monday and lodged in the Oldham County Jail.

Police say the father of the baby is not known, and the cause of death has not been determined.

A female visitor to the prison was hospitalized for an apparent miscarriage, but hospital workers determined she had given birth to a full-term baby. Prison staff found the body a short time later.
