Babysitter Pleads Not Guilty
02/01/12 MRC/AP

A 28-year-old baby sitter has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder in the death of a toddler in her care.

Ashley Nicole Chapman of Vine Grove entered the plea Tuesday morning in Hardin County Circuit Court in Elizabethtown. She is being held in the Hardin County Detention Center on $500,000 cash bond.

Kentucky State Police say Chapman struck and shook Layla Johnson, causing her to lose consciousness and sustain extensive bruising and bleeding in the brain.

State police say the child's grandmother picked her up last Wednesday and immediately took her to Hardin Memorial Hospital. She was transported to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville where she died Sunday.
