Lawmakers Hung-up On Redistricting
02/02/12 WGC/AP
Lawmakers still have reached no agreement on congressional redistricting.
House Speaker Greg Stumbo said Wednesday that he's hopeful a deal can be struck soon between House and Senate negotiators. So far, an agreement has been elusive.
The once-a-decade chore of redrawing boundaries around congressional and legislative districts has consumed the first month of the legislative session. Lawmakers did get through legislative redistricting, but a lawsuit put that on hold.
Now negotiators for the Democratic-controlled House and Republican-dominated Senate are at an impasse on congressional redistricting. They postponed the filing deadline for a week hoping to iron out differences, but Stumbo said Wednesday no progress has been made.
Stumbo said if an agreement isn't reached by Monday, the matter would likely go to court.
