House Approves Coach Training Bill

High school and middle school coaches in Kentucky would be required to complete training to recognize and treat concussions and other head injuries under a proposal that has passed the state House.
On Thursday, House members unanimously voted to approve House Bill 281 filed by Democratic Representative Joni Jenkins of Shively.
In addition to requiring training on how to recognize and treat head injuries, the measure identifies the actions coaches must take before athletes with suspected head injuries may return to play.
At a House Education Committee hearing in January, Julian Tackett, CEO of the Kentucky High School Athletics Association, said that only about a quarter of the state's school districts have athletic trainers to evaluate players with suspected head injuries.
