Bridge Contractors Sought
01/31/12 MRC/AP
Kentucky is seeking contractors to design and build a new downtown bridge in Louisville as part of its half of a massive project with Indiana to improve traffic flow across the Ohio River.
The notice of intent is the first step toward selecting contractors to build the new Interstate 65 bridge, modernize the Kennedy Interchange and expand the I-65 approach to Indiana. That's Kentucky half of the estimated $2.6 billion project.
Indiana is responsible for building a new East End bridge and other projects.
Kentucky Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said Monday the state is looking for an innovative team of contractors capable of reducing costs, speeding construction and delivering a reliable transportation system.
The two states hope to begin construction by year's end. The anticipated completion date is mid-2018.
