Louisville Metro police say Carlos Jesus Lobato, 28, of Louisville, committed the break-ins between July 29 and September 25.
Police were lead to Lobato after viewing security videos from a Planet Fitness location and other places near the site where the break-ins occurred. They also obtained surveillance video showing Lobato using a credit card stolen during one of the crimes to purchase more than $1,400 in items.
After his arrest, Lobato told police he got into the cars by force or would take the keys to the vehicles from the lockers of customers at the workout facilities.
The charges Lobato is being held on included the theft of a set of golf clubs valued at more than $3,000 belonging to Caleb Wimberg, a senior at Holy Cross High School and a member of the school golf team.
Wimberg’s clubs were stolen from his vehicle in at the school just before he was attempting to qualifying for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association state tournament. They were recovered when Lobato turned himself in on September 27.
Lobato said he committed the thefts to support a drug habit. He is scheduled to be back in court on October 8.
