A new poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation says 72 percent of Kentuckians like the state’s Medicaid program and do not want to change it.
But the poll also found that half of the people who voted for new Republican Governor Matt Bevin want the program scaled back to cover fewer people.
Kentucky was among 31 states that chose to expand its Medicaid program under the federal Affordable Care Act. The move added more than 400,000 people to Kentucky’s Medicaid rolls, many more than state officials had estimated. Kentucky’s uninsured rate plummeted, but Republican lawmakers worry how the state will pay for its share of the costs.
Bevin defeated Democrat Jack Conway in November by 9 percentage points after promising to repeal the expansion and replace it with something else.
