Brandenburg Mayor Ronnie Joyner outlined goals in the annual presentation of the upcoming city budget for 2020-21 during a special called meeting Wednesday (5/27) night.
The meeting was the first time the full council has assembled in person since February’s regular meeting. As the group social distanced and reviewed the budget information. The proposed operating budget contains appropriations of just $2.8 million. In his budget address, Mayor Joyner said that the goal is to continue build upon the dependable city services through infrastructure improvements for future growth of the city and community. Ongoing projects mentioned included radio read meters in the Water and Sewer Department; two grant projects for the ongoing Main Street sidewalk project. He also proposed funds to directed toward replacement of the welcome to Brandenburg signage, resurfacing and striping of Nickel Park.
Mayor Joyner stated in the letter to the city council, with the expected with Nucor Steel, some focus on current growth and expansion of services could depend on possible annexation to help increase the city tax base. The proposed budget includes a twenty nine cent pay increase for employees along with a purchase of a new truck for the Water and Sewer Department. The budget also includes a two percent increase in water and sewer fees.
