The Brandenburg City Council met during their regular meeting Monday (3/14) evening.
The council heard brief statements from five residents who were seeking to fill the vacated term of Michael Kelly, who resigned last month. After the statements were made by Bric Pace, Ginger Coomes, David Woodward, Ryan Skaggs, and Mark Spry, the council entered into a short closed session for the purpose to discuss the appointment and purchase or sale of property by a public agency. The council returned to take no action from the closed session.
Council members voted on a motion made by Councilman Bradley Johnson to appoint Ginger Coomes to fill the vacant seat. Council members Bradley Johnson and Charlotte Ford voted yes, Councilman Bruce Fackler voted no, Councilmen Bryan Claycomb and Bill Basham abstained from the vote. Once the tally was announced, Bradley questioned the majority of the council vote. After some discussion and guidance by the city attorney, the two abstained votes were considered with the yes votes making the majority. Coomes was sworn in by Mayor Ronnie Joyner and joined the council for the remainder of the business session.
In other business, the council approved a rezoning request for the triangle parcel of property between Broadway Street and the slip ramp off of the Bypass. They also heard the second reading of an ordinance amending building, electric, and rezoning fees of the City Planning and Zoning. The council also heard the first reading of ordinance establishing the monthly pay rate for the Mayor of $2,000 and $250 for council members.
