The Kentucky State Police responded to a head-on collision in Breckinridge County just before 3:30 CST Friday afternoon that resulted in three fatalities.
The preliminary investigation revealed 59 year-old Charles Lucas, of Irvington, was operating a 2013 Toyota pickup truck westbound on KY 86, just east of the intersection of 690 in Custer, when for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line into the path of a 2009 Ford Escape traveling eastbound, driven by 37 year-old Kenneth Smallwood, of Harned.
Lucas was transported to Baptist Health Hardin, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Smallwood and a passenger in Lucas’ vehicle, 55 year-old Edna Lucas, of Irvington, were pronounced deceased at the scene. A 3-year-old passenger in Smallwood’s vehicle was not injured.
The affected portion of KY 86 was closed for several hours so troopers could reconstruct the collision.
Kentucky State Police Post 4 was assisted at the scene by the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office, Breckinridge County EMS, and the Breckinridge Coroner’s Office.
The collision remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
