The Kentucky State Police responded to a two-vehicle collision involving a school bus in Breckinridge County around 3:30 p.m. CST Monday.
The preliminary investigation revealed that 29 year-old Gilbert Edlin, of Elizabethtown, was operating a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck southbound near the 700 block of Rosetta Corners Road. After cresting a hill, Edlin’s vehicle crossed into the path of a 2019 Freightliner school bus traveling northbound before striking the bus head-on.
Edlin was flown to the University of Louisville Hospital for life-threatening injuries. Thirty-one students were on the bus at the time of the collision. Four were taken to Baptist Health Hardin by ambulance for minor injuries and released a short time later. The remainder of the students were released to parents and guardians at the scene. The school bus was operated by 61 year-old Deborah Matthews, of Custer, who reported no injuries.
The affected portion of Rosetta Corners Road was closed for several hours in order to allow troopers to reconstruct the collision.
Kentucky State Police was assisted at the scene by the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office, Breckinridge County EMS, Breckinridge County Board of Education, and the Custer Volunteer Fire Department.
The collision remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
