A Somerset church has received worldwide attention after a pastor’s response to what he thought was a plea for help went viral on social media.
The incident began when a woman called Heritage Hope Church of God asking for $17 to buy baby formula, claiming her baby was hungry. Pastor Johnny Dunbar, who has led the church for decades, agreed to help.
Dunbar said he as said no a thousand times, been scammed and told every story in the world, but this time he said yes.
The woman was actually conducting a TikTok challenge, posing as a mother in need to test how churches would respond. She contacted numerous churches nationwide, including megachurches, and many refused to help.
After the woman posted about Dunbar’s willingness to help, the video gained massive attention.
The woman said she only had 300 followers but the answer yes to help has over 3 million people.
The viral response has led to people reaching out to offer money to help the small congregation’s ministries. The church has about 100 members.
Dunbar reflected on the religious significance of the challenge centering on a baby.
He said, “God sent a baby to rescue us. He sent a baby not a mighty warrior.”
The pastor said the church has received substantial donations but is keeping the amount anonymous. The money will only be used to help others.
