A 29 year-old man found guilty of killing a Louisville construction worker and shooting an off-duty Louisville Metro Police Department officer will likely be behind bars for the rest of his life.
Keyshaun Stewart is facing two consecutive life sentences for the shooting that happened back in 2021 on the Watterson Expressway near Dixie Highway. Fred O’Bannon, a father of five, was killed while Louisville Metro Police Department officer Chris Lane was shot in the face.
Stewart was found guilty but mentally ill of murder, criminal intent to murder, and fleeing or evading police.
Stewart’s defense argued he was failed by mental health providers across the area. During Friday’s sentencing, his defense argued the sentence should be lowered to 20 years in prison because of his history of mental illness. The defense argued there’s no guarantee Stewart will receive mental health help in prison.
However, the judge followed the jury’s recommendation and sentenced Stewart to serve two consecutive life sentences in prison.
