The new Interstate 65 bridge over the Ohio River in downtown Louisville will be open to traffic by the end of the year, but traffic headaches are still expected for the next year.

Even though building the bridges is the most visible part of the project, the Kennedy Bridge, is scheduled to get a major overhaul too, meaning the new bridge is going to have two-way traffic for awhile.

There was some managing of expectations Monday because the news that construction is ahead of schedule is almost too exciting when you’re talking about a bridge some thought might never be built.
When construction started on the new I-65 bridge, crews were expected to work a couple of years and get the bridge done by next April. Then that moved up to January, four months ahead of schedule.
Before the span opens to cars though, it will temporarily have pedestrians as a public celebration of the finally finished bridge.
Tolls will not begin until end of the project. Meaning either around the time when both the Kennedy and the new downtown bridge carry traffic, or when the East End bridge opens, whichever happens first. The East End bridge should be done in late 2016 or early 2017.

Walsh Construction will get a $40,000 bonus for every day that it is early on the December 9, 2016 deadline having all the construction done, including the re-decked Kennedy and improved access to the bridges. That amount is capped at $12 million. If construction should run over, the company would have to pay $80,000 a day for each day past December 9 with no cap.

Source: WAVE

A major announcement was made Monday (10/12) regarding the Ohio River Bridges Project.
