The Indiana Department of Transportation met with engineering consultants and its contractor Thursday (5\/18) to discuss details of a $7 million, 2-year project to repair and repaint the structure that carries Indiana State Road 135 over the Ohio River. It is the only Ohio River crossing between Louisville and Tell City.<\/p>\n
North Star Painting, Indiana\u2019s contractor, will have crews onsite in early July. Temporary traffic signals should be installed on or after July 10. Work includes limited repairs followed by sandblasting and application of three coats of specified bridge paint.<\/p>\n
Over water, the bridge structure stands as a two-span continuous steel thru-truss bridge. Approaches on the Indiana and Kentucky sides are continuous composite steel girder structures that account for a series of shorter spans. INDOT officials anticipate activities at the approach spans to begin in mid-July. It is unlikely that operations on the two-span over-water section will begin before next year. <\/p>\n
Motorists will be restricted to crossing segments of the bridge one-lane-at-a-time. The single-lane segments are limited to 1500 feet or less, and should reduce wait time and shorten traffic queues.<\/p>\n
The Matthew Welsh Bridge measures 3100 feet end-to-end with nearly 31 feet of clear roadway side-to-side and was built in 1966. INDOT said 5,130 vehicles per day crosses the bridge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
