Approximately 50 laboratory confirmed cases have been recorded, according to a statement by Donny Gill, public information officer for the department.<\/p>\n
The majority of the cases have been in daycare age children. Gill said child care centers are working diligently with the health department in preventing further spread of this illness.<\/p>\n
Shigella is a bacteria or germ that infects the bowels and causes a highly contagious acute diarrheal illness. The Shigella bacteria causes an illness called Shigellosis, which most often occurs in young children.<\/p>\n
Most stool cultures from shigellosis cases in the two counties have thus far been positive for Shigella sonnei, which is the most common strain of Shigella.<\/p>\n
To help prevent the disease from spreading the health department advises frequent hand washing with soap and water, particularly after a bathroom visit. Children with diarrhea should be kept at home and not participate in group activities, including church or community events and sports activities, particularly swimming. Confirmed cases are not to attend a day cares until 48 hours after completing required antibotics, the health department said.<\/p>\n
Adults with similar symptoms should refrain from food preparation until the illness passes.
