\nAn Elizabethtown woman was arrested late Thursday afternoon for striking her 17-year-old son in the head with a hammer, fracturing the boy\u2019s skull, according to police.<\/p>\n

Monique McNair, 33, is charged with first-degree assault, a Class B felony punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison, if convicted.<\/p>\n

According to an arrest citation, the boy was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital with a black eye and injury to his left cheek. Hospital staff later determined the boy also had a skull fracture. He reportedly told Elizabethtown police at the hospital he had been struck by his mother with a hammer. He said she had become upset with him.<\/p>\n

He said his mother then told him to leave the house, according to the report.<\/p>\n

About 10 minutes prior to the child arriving at the hospital, McNair contacted police and said her son had run away from home. When police arrived at their Michelle Avenue residence, police saw a hammer on the living room floor and broken glass.<\/p>\n

The boy\u2019s sister told a school official what she had witnessed before arriving at school and the official went to the home, according to the report. McNair told the school official \u201cthat she didn\u2019t want to go look for him, that she would rather go to Walmart to get her phone fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n

McNair is being held in lieu of a partially secured $50,000 bond in the Hardin County Detention Center.
