\nA six-day manhunt that spanned both Kentucky and Tennessee ended early Friday morning when police shot and killed fugitive rapist Floyd Cook.<\/p>\n

Kentucky State Police said two troopers and a U.S. Marshal encountered Cook near a home on KY 61 about seven miles south of Burkesville about 12:21 a.m. Cook had a handgun and gunfire was exchanged.<\/p>\n

Cook was injured in the gun battle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cumberland County Coroner.<\/p>\n

No officers were injured.<\/p>\n

The manhunt for Cook, 62, of Lebanon, Kentucky began after he was accused of shooting and wounding an Algood, TN police officer during a traffic stop on the afternoon of Saturday, October 24. He fled in a black Ford truck.<\/p>\n

About an hour later, a Kentucky State Police trooper recognized Cook’s vehicle and tried to stop him in rural Cumberland County. Cook tried to speed away, but wrecked and jumped from the truck on foot. He allegedly opened fire on the officer, missed and ran into the woods.<\/p>\n

Police described Cook as “armed, dangerous and desperate.”<\/p>\n

Cook was convicted of rape in the 1970s. He was wanted in Marion County, KY for failing to comply with the sex offender registry, according to Sheriff Jimmy Clements. He also had convictions for robbery, burglary, assault and riot, and was wanted in Hardin County on an indictment charging him with trafficking methampetamine and tampering with evidence.<\/p>\n

With Cook on the run along the Kentucky-Tennessee border, schools in Cumberland County canceled classes for three days fearing students might cross his path while en route to and from school.<\/p>\n

Two of Cook’s known associates, Katy McCarty, 35, and 50-year-old Troy Wayne, were found, arrested and are being held as fugitives.
