\nAlmost 10,000 employees of Louisville’s two Ford plants could get their first raises in ten years, and have $10,000 in bonuses and profit-sharing to spend for the holidays. But members of United Auto Workers Local 862 rejected Ford’s four-year contract offer by a 2-1 majority.<\/p>\n

The vote was 1,258 for to 2,341 against at the Kentucky Truck Plant and 1,221 for to 2,585 against at Louisville Assembly Plant. Similar rejections at several other Ford facilities put the entire national contract in jeopardy, and with it, Ford’s pledge of $9 billion re-investments in its North American plants.<\/p>\n

One issue, almost 3,000 workers in Louisville have hired on at a second-tier, or lower wage, during the past seven years. Although they too would get $8,500 ratification bonuses along with two three-percent wages and two four-percent bonuses over the next four years, they would need seven years before their wage would equal the $28 per hour that legacy, or production line workers hired prior to 2008, earn now.
