\nPeople who operate drones for recreational purposes now have deadlines to register their aircraft with the FAA, according to guidelines announced Monday.<\/p>\n

Users who have previously operated small, unmanned aircraft for recreational purposes prior to December 21 have until February 19, 2016, to register. People who purchase drones after December 21, 2015 must register before their first flight. This applies to drones that weigh between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds and that can carry payloads such as cameras and packages.<\/p>\n

The new guidelines do not apply to commercial drones such as those used to shoot professional video. Those users must currently apply for an exemption to a registration process that’s similar to traditional aircraft pilots. Updated registration rules for commercial drones are expected in early 2016.<\/p>\n

The timing of the announcement was critical. The Consumer Electronics Association estimates 700,000 people will buy drones during the holiday shopping season. The FAA reported there have been hundreds of “close encounters” between drones and airplanes in recent years, which the organization said can result in serious injuries or damage.<\/p>\n

The registration fee of $5 is being waived from December 21 until January 20 to encourage as many people as possible to register. A streamlined online registration process at www.faa.gov<\/a> is also being offered as an alternative to the paper-based process. Users will be assigned an identification number, and that number must be marked on all aircraft they fly. Registration is valid for three years.
