\nAfter less than a year on the job, Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Patrick Hughes plans to step down from the job.<\/p>\n

In an email to fellow Democrats, Hughes says he is resigning to fully focus on his law practice.<\/p>\n

Hughes says he notified the party’s State Central Executive Committee. The Edgewood attorney says he will do everything he can to ensure a “smooth transition” for his successor.<\/p>\n

Hughes’ announcement late Friday comes at a time when the Democratic Party is at a low ebb in Kentucky.<\/p>\n

Democrats lost the governorship and some other statewide offices in last year’s election. Democrats are clinging to a slim majority in the Kentucky House. House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover is predicting Monday will be “an historic day” in Kentucky. He has declined to elaborate.
