The project calls for a three-lane roadway section with an 11-foot driving lane in both directions and a 13-foot center turn lane between Ring Road and the U.S. 31W Bypass.<\/p>\n
The project also includes the addition of a sidewalk along the north side to serve the new elementary school, a shared-use path on the south side and a replacement bridge across Billy Creek. Storm sewers also will be constructed to handle drainage. Construction will correct road conditions including inadequate drainage, narrow pavement and limited recovery areas. Traffic has increased with construction of the new G.C. Burkhead Elementary School, the Early College and Career Center and the Hardin County Public Library\u2019s main branch. An access road into Elizabethtown Sports Park is seldom used because of traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
The public was invited to a meeting Tuesday to view drafts of preliminary alternatives at G.C. Burkhead. Comments and input received from the meeting and from local officials will be considered in the selection of the alternative for the final design process. That decision is expected to be made this spring.<\/p>\n
The improvement project was first introduced in 2014 as part of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet\u2019s six-year highway plan. The design for the project has been in the works since, said Bradley Bottoms, project manager with the Department of Highways District 4 office. Future phases of the project, including right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, construction and funding will be addressed during the current legislative session.
