\nLocal and state leaders joined Nucor executives during a ground breaking ceremony of the company’s newest steel plating facility in Brandenburg Friday (10\/24) afternoon.<\/p>\n

First announced in March 2019, Nucor Brandenburg will be a steel plate mill which will feature state of the art electric arc technology furnace to produce discrete, coiled, and heat-treated plate in widths and thicknesses, not currently offered by Nucor. The mill will have the capacity to produce 1,200,000 tons per year. The Brandenburg site allows Nucor to distribute it’s products throughout the Midwest by the Ohio River, CSX rail, and by truck logistics. The Brandenburg Mill will enable Nucor to produce 97 percent of the plate products commercially available in the U.S. market.<\/p>\n

Production is expected to startup in 2022 and will employee 400 full time careers at average salary of $72,000 a year. Up to 1,200 temporary construction jobs will created at the beginning of the project. Additional support jobs are also a possibility as the facility comes online. Nucor Brandenburg will become the largest employer in Meade County with an estimated economic impact of 3,040 direct or indirect jobs statewide and an estimated $14.3 million in payroll-associated taxes.<\/p>\n

Nucor President and CEO Leon Topalian said “We are very excited to begin construction on our new plate mill in Kentucky which will make us a market leader in steel plate products.” He continued “The Brandenburg location will give Nucor transportation advantages in serving the Midwest plate market, which is the largest plate consuming market in U.S.<\/p>\n

Nucor operates more than 15 facilities in Kentucky and employees over 2,000 teammates. The Brandenburg Mill is largest investment to date for Nucor at a price of $1.70 billion. Johnny Jacobs, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Steel Brandenburg said “We look forward to growing our Brandenburg team and becoming an important part of this community”<\/p>\n
