The new $8.3 million facility will replace the current Brandenburg waste treatment plant, which sits in the footprint of the future Nucor Steel facility, that is under construction. The new facility will be state of the art with a smaller footprint with an extended aeration activated sludge process. It will also feature operational flexibility and allow for for future expansion and upgrades as needed.<\/p>\n
This project is the first to be approved by the Kentucky Local Government Public-Private Partnership Board since House Bill 391 was approved in 2016. The facility was already in the planning stages as the current facility was struggling with compliance issues. After the Nucor announcement was made two years ago, city leaders had to find a quick solution for the upcoming growth in the community associated with the new steel mill. <\/p>\n
The project is driven by encompassing a joint partnership between the Brandenburg City and Meade County officials along with eight other public and private entities to make the infrastructure improvement. The project was advanced due to the fact the city already owned property that the new facility will be built upon and the leverage of resources of the partnership will save the city an estimated $3.5 million in costs and a year of time in the completion of the project.<\/p>\n
State leaders believe this project will forge the path to guide and model other local governments to make infrastructure improvements in the future.<\/p>\n
