A Glasgow resident received a notification letter in the mail that was allegedly from Nationwide Insurance advising them that they were the beneficiary of a $75,000 settlement.<\/p>\n
The letter contained a check addressed to the resident. The check appeared to be from Nationwide, having the Nationwide logo and address on it.<\/p>\n
The letter instructed the resident to contact them for information on the settlement. When the resident contacted the number, they were told to cash the check and return a portion of the money to Nationwide to pay for processing of the settlement.<\/p>\n
If the resident had fallen victim to the scam, they would have been responsible for the full amount of the check.<\/p>\n
The Glasgow Police Department confirmed through the Nationwide Fraud Department that they have received complaints from victims across the country reporting similar incidents.<\/p>\n
If you receive a similar letter, you should contact your local law enforcement agency as well as the Nationwide Fraud Department at 1-800-474-7633.
