A piece of American History was docked over the Labor Day weekend at the Brandenburg waterfront as the USS LST 325 visited for tours and to educate about it’s work during World War Two. The visit has been two years in the making as the COVID pandemic forced the rescheduling of the visit. <\/p>\n
During the USS LST 325 Memorial Festival, the public had the chance to tour the vessel and learn about it’s historic role in American and Greek history. The vessel was built in 1943 and is the last fully operational World War Two landing ship. The ship can carry twenty Sherman tanks along with 30 to 40 wheeled or tracked vehicles and 200 to 400 soldiers.<\/p>\n
The weekend also featured the return of the annual Meade County Angel Ministry’s Rumble at The River car show on Saturday and Sunday which featured 170 cars on display. Meade County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Executive Director Annie Hamilton said exact attendance numbers are not immediately available, but preliminary estimates of other LST 325 visits generally expect about 5,000 visitors. Due to the large crowds, shuttles were used to transport visitors from the Meade County High School and the Meade County Courthouse to the events downtown which closed River Road three of the four days of the visit. Hamilton said the LST 325 has several local ties to the local region from Jeffersonville and Evansville, Indiana during construction to training at Fort Knox during it’s use in the war time.<\/p>\n
The event was major success for the various groups who worked hard to bring the individual events together for the event. Hamilton said that the proceed from the paid tours of the LST 325 along with their merchandise is used to fully cover expenses to operate the ship. The ship workers are volunteers who run the vessel.<\/p>\n
