\nOfficials in the counties surrounding Fort Knox are hoping that an economic analysis will help their communities discover methods to lessen reliance on the military base in the face of military cutbacks across the nation.<\/p>\n

Lincoln Trail Area Development District executive director Wendell Lawrence said a contractor will be chosen to head the estimated $175,000 research project.<\/p>\n

The project’s planning document says cutbacks at Fort Knox have the potential to affect all of the more than 150,000 residents in Hardin, LaRue and Meade counties.<\/p>\n

Lawrence says workforce development also is a critical part of the research.<\/p>\n

He says work will begin on the diversification plan in the coming months as soon as a successful contractor is chosen.
