Former Democratic Governor Beshear announced “Save Kentucky Healthcare” on Thursday (2\/11\/16), a tax-exempt organization that will pay for an online campaign that Beshear says will educate voters about what is happening to health care in Kentucky.<\/p>\n
As governor, Beshear issued executive orders to expand the state’s Medicaid program and establish Kynect, a state-operated exchange where people can purchase private health insurance plans with the help of a federal subsidy. More than 500,000 people have gotten health insurance through the programs, with more than 400,000 of them being added to the state’s Medicaid rolls.<\/p>\n
Republican Governor Matt Bevin criticized both programs as too expensive. He will dismantle kynect by the end of the year and is trying to replace the Medicaid expansion with a different program.<\/p>\n
Bevin says former Governor Beshear’s opposition to his plan to dismantle the state health care program known as Kynect is an effort to promote his political legacy.<\/p>\n
Bevin also said in a statement that he is “focused on fixing Kentucky’s fiscal crisis,” which includes $30 billion in unfunded pension liabilities for teachers and state workers.
