The project is on schedule and contractors are working with the city to begin a start up process plan for the new lagoon of the facility. Some equipment is yet to arrive due to issues with supply chain but overall the project is moving forward. The conversation then focused upon the water plant.

Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that research was under way to find a quick fix for a magnesium issue that has caused one water well to taken out of service last fall. He said that city leaders are working with the company, takes care of the city’s water equipment and who discovered the magnesium issue. The company has offered options to either change the treatment of the water to remove the magnesium or a filtering process which would remove that and iron product from the water and result in doubling the water plant’s daily output to two million gallons a day. The estimated cost of the filtering process is $1.3 million and would place their equipment in the city’s plant. Mayor Joyner said the water was still safe to drink and was under state levels but the magnesium issued is needed to be fixed. He said that main issue was the cost and recommended that the city borrow the $1.3 million and water sales already known would pay for the loan with out any increase to water rates. He projected around $378,000 a year in sales between Nucor and Monument Chemical alone would assist the payment of the note.

After a lengthy discussion and debate of possibilities related to drilling a new well or proceeding toward the new filtering system, the council voted to move forward with seeking bids to get necessary information before making a final vote on the issue.

In other business, City Clerk Amy Haynes said that Christmas By The River numbers were down but overall was a success. She said the car count and donations were both down this year. The donations were down about $2,000 this year. The council also voted to have the Kentucky League of Cities to update the personnel policy. A committee will work with the KLC representatives to draft the update.

Toward the end of the meeting, Mayor Joyner discussed the proposed annexation map which would expand the city limits by approximately 2,215 acres. The new area would bring most of the industrial property from Shamrock Road to Nelson Road and along and just to the south and east of Kentucky 933 to the railroad trestle and then north to the Ohio River and back to Riverfront Park into the city limits. The annexation would take in Monument Chemical and Nucor along with residential along Christian Church and Mooreman Roads.

The council reviewed the map and discussed the next steps of the process.
