\nChanges are coming to a Hardin County intersection where 10 collisions, including two fatal crashes, have occurred in the 20 months since it opened, but a traffic signal is not among them.<\/p>\n

Chris Jessie, public information officer for Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 4, said officials from Hardin County and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet met last week to discuss the crash history and brainstorm about ways to reduce the number of accidents at the intersection of Patriot Parkway and Deckard School Road.<\/p>\n

Jessie said all 10 of the crashes at Patriot Parkway and Deckard School Road involved traffic moving across the Parkway, also known as KY 361, from Deckard School Road approaches. None of the crashes have been a result of turning movements.<\/p>\n

A number of changes were considered, but a traffic signal is not an option, Jessie said, because the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet must follow the national standards for warranting a traffic signal, and this particular intersection does not meet those standards.<\/p>\n

Community members had lobbied hard for a light here after each of the deadly crashes.<\/p>\n

Jessie said it was decided the state will install a J-turn. This will allow left turns from Patriot Parkway onto Deckard School Road, but it would prevent cross\/through movement on Deckard School Road and prevent lefts out of Deckard School Road onto Patriot Parkway. The design includes mid-block U-turns.<\/p>\n

Jessie said the anticipated effect will be drivers traveling southeast into the Elizabethtown area will turn right onto Patriot Parkway and then left at the signal onto KY 220. Drivers traveling northwest toward Vine Grove would travel down Patriot Parkway to signal and turn right on KY 361 and then left, from a designated left turn lane crossing two lanes of traffic rather than four, onto Deckard School Road.
