\nThe state of Kentucky is asking residents to donate a portion of their tax returns to help feed the hungry.<\/p>\n

Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles asked taxpayers to check a box on their income tax return that routes a small portion of their return to the Farms to Food Banks Trust Fund.<\/p>\n

The program gives grants to nonprofits to purchase surplus produce from farmers and distribute them to the poor. Quarles described the program as a win-win: the hungry are fed and farmers are paid for food that would otherwise go to waste.<\/p>\n

Quarles noted that a quarter of Kentucky children lack consistent access to food.<\/p>\n

Last year, the program distributed 2.6 million pounds of fruits and vegetables to struggling families from 300 Kentucky farmers.<\/p>\n
