Water seeps into roadway cracks. Freezing and thawing cycles cause pavement to expand and break apart. Add traffic to the mix, in addition to winter snow removal operations, and a small crack can quickly become a pothole.<\/p>\n<p>A cold mix is used to repair potholes during winter months but is generally not a long-term repair. Once spring arrives, potholes are fixed with a hot asphalt mix.
