Letcher County Sheriff Shawn \u201cMickey\u201d Stines was arraigned by way of a virtual hearing on Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins.<\/p>\n
Governor Beshear\u2019s letter to Stines read, \u201cWe ask that you tender your resignation as the Letcher County Sheriff to the Letcher County Judge\/Executive by the end of Friday, September 27, 2024. If you do not tender your resignation, the Governor will move forward with removal.\u201d<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t clear what led to the shooting. The preliminary investigation indicates Letcher County Sheriff Shawn \u201cMickey\u201d Stines shot District Judge Kevin Mullins multiple times following an argument inside the courthouse, according to Kentucky State Police.<\/p>\n
The Letcher County courthouse in Whitesburg will remain closed through the end of the month. Cases and courthouse activity have been put on pause.
