Sheriff Shawn \u2018Mickey\u2019 Stines is charged with murder in the death of District Judge Kevin Mullins on September 19.<\/p>\n
Stines pleaded not guilty to the charge a week later.<\/p>\n
In a letter sent to Governor Andy Beshear\u2019s Office, Stines\u2019 attorney said his client\u2019s decision was not the \u201cresult of any ultimatum or in any way as a concession to any allegations made by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.\u201d<\/p>\n
They add Stines\u2019 decision is to allow for a successor to protect the \u201cbeloved constituents\u201d in Letcher County while he awaits the legal challenges ahead.<\/p>\n
Stines served as Sheriff for 22 years and his retirement is effective immediately.<\/p>\n
He returns to court on Tuesday.
