\nOver 300 people attended a public meeting\u00a0 hosted by the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Department at the Breckinridge County High School Thursday (11\/7) evening.<\/p>\n

The two hour session contained information about the recently discovered Chronic Wasting Disease, which was found in a deer near Custer.\u00a0 Officials say Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal neurologic disease that affects dee\u200br, elk and other members of the deer family\u200b\u200b. It is caused by a prion, a type of protein that attacks the brain and nervous system. There is currently no known cure, the disease has spread extensively among deer and elk populations over the past two decades.\u200b\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

Officials say the disease can spread through contact of deer bodily fluids or feces. A surveillance zone has been set up in Breckinridge, Meade, and Hardin counties to detect and prevent the spread of CWD through monitoring activities, and implementing specific regulations to manage the spread of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the question and answer session of the meeting, several questioned the need for the zone and debated several issues in relation to regulations of deer farms. Local and State officials were also in attendance to learn more about the issue.<\/p>\n
