Makenzie Davis with Richmond Police says it is not uncommon for them to see a scam that targets the community for their money or private information.<\/p>\n
But the latest scam even impersonates an officer in its effort to swindle unsuspecting citizens.<\/p>\n
Davis said they were using Officer Faulkner\u2019s name, using their badge number, and even went so far as to set up a voicemail that sounded like Officer Faulkner.<\/p>\n
This same tactic was also used last week in Boyle County, as someone pretended to be former Sheriff Derek Robbins.<\/p>\n
Davis said scammers are getting really crafty and try to use those scare tactics and make you feel like you really have to respond to things like a text message that would never normally come from an officer.<\/p>\n
Coleman joined 46 other attorneys general in the calls for improvement of the Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD), saying, \u201cBad actors who prey on the vulnerable with illegal robocalls have no place in Kentucky.”<\/p>\n
Davis hopes this will help them see a decline in those incidents moving forward.<\/p>\n
But she knows these scams will continue to pop up in one way or another, so she urges residents to remain vigilant when you pick up the phone.<\/p>\n
Davis said never click on something that is unfamiliar to you, or if it is something that seems to be too good to be true, it probably is.<\/p>\n
Richmond Police say they will never normally contact citizens through text, and Davis says if you ever want to verify whether or not an officer is trying to reach you, you can call their non-emergency dispatch line at 859-624-4776.
