The mayor has been fighting the battle over stolen copper wire for a while now and announced a multi-agency task force to address the widespread copper wire theft in October. So it wasn\u2019t a surprise Wednesday when he announced four people were charged with stealing copper wire.<\/p>\n
What was more surprising was the video from Okolona, near Jefferson Mall, showing how they did it.<\/p>\n
The theft happened at 4 a.m. on February 18. Suspects cut an AT&T communication line and one of the thieves appears to attach the copper wire to their car and then drive off with it trailing behind, making off with more than 300 feet of wire from AT&T.<\/p>\n
Greenberg said money is motivating a lot of a copper wire theft.<\/p>\n
In this case, the suspects did not get away because patrolling Louisville Metro Police officers discovered a guide wire discarded in the street when the car sped off. Then, they found the surveillance video and, before long, detectives found the car and the four suspected thieves in Fairdale.<\/p>\n
Greenberg said they will continue to crack down on this behavior.<\/p>\n
Greenberg said the four people connected to this incident, Colin James Hardin, Jasmine Becker, Robert Lapinsky and John R. Cummins, were arrested last week. They have been charged with a variety of different things, ranging from theft to felony criminal mischief.
