The Brandenburg City Council met during a work session Thursday (3\/6) afternoon to discuss and attempt to figure out what to do with 3 tabled proposed ordinances.<\/p>\n
The session was for the council to discuss the proposed ordinance 637 that is related to Business & Occupation License Fees. Mayor David Pace explained that the ordinance is the important piece of the process to allow city leaders to have actual data of what the additional income numbers would be if a tax as imposed. He stressed that the current calendar year would be a data collection year and no fees would be paid. He pointed to the past two years of general fund budgets which shows the city is thinly covering their financial needs with a positive balanced budget. <\/p>\n
As the discussion evolved, the consensus of the council grew into amending the ordinance to strike language setting any limits on salary along with any rates to be collected in the future. Council members expressed concerns of having a possible fee schedule just for data collection. The discussion also resulted in the to use the occupational fee data to determine the final fate of the tabled ordinances related to establishing a city tourism board and a restaurant tax. Mayor Pace said the occupation tax data would determine if there would be a true need for the additional taxes. He asked the council to possibly consider a vote on the occupation tax at the council’s regular meeting on Monday (3\/10) night. Mayor Pace said if the ordinance is approved, that would allow the city to start receiving the first quarter data as business owners submit their payroll information to federal and state reporting agencies. <\/p>\n
