It now heads to Governor Andy Beshear’s desk for a signature.<\/p>\n
A floor amendment on SB 73 clarifies the definition of sexual extortion and strengthens penalties, making it a felony in cases involving severe harm, weapons, or offenders in positions of trust. <\/p>\n
It also allows homicide or assault charges if a victim dies or is seriously injured due to the crime. Additionally, the amendment ensures education efforts are age-appropriate and targeted to students in grades 6 through 12.<\/p>\n
Under SB 73, sexual extortion is defined as using threats to coerce individuals into engaging in sexual acts, producing explicit materials, providing payments, or acting against their will. <\/p>\n
The bill includes escalating penalties, with severe charges for cases involving minors or significant harm. It also establishes civil remedies, empowering victims, and their families to seek damages.<\/p>\n
To enhance prevention and awareness, SB 73 requires schools and postsecondary institutions to educate students and parents about the dangers of sextortion. <\/p>\n
Schools must also prominently display resources such as hotline numbers and reporting information to ensure victims know where to turn for help.
