Demonstrations are set to take place in more than 280 cities nationwide where workers will rally outside the local post office on March 23.<\/p>\n
Paul Larkin, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 468, emphasized the potential impact of privatization efforts on both employees and customers.<\/p>\n
Larkin said the post office has 460,000 employees, 73,000 of which are veterans. If they change the way things are done, it could eliminate a significant number of jobs and leave the public uncertain about how their mail service will function in the future.<\/p>\n
A major concern for postal workers is the potential shift to a for-profit model, which could lead to reduced mail delivery days and increased costs for rural residents. Currently, United State Postal Service services 160 million delivery points nationwide, with 51 million of those in rural areas.<\/p>\n
Larkin warned that privatization could force rural customers to travel long distances to collect mail, disrupting essential services such as medication and check deliveries.<\/p>\n
Larkin explained if delivery was cut to once every three days to each point, up to 70% of the 460,000 postal employees could lose their jobs.<\/p>\n
The National Association of Letter Carriers and other postal unions are urging the public to contact their congressional representatives and attend the rallies to oppose any legislative changes that could impact the United State Postal Service.
