Any time there is destructive weather, experts say there is a risk of what they call \u201cout-of-town storm chasers\u201d targeting victims who are cleaning up their big mess.<\/p>\n
The emotional strain from financial uncertainty can set in within a matter of hours.<\/p>\n
Whitney Adkins from the BBB for Greater Kentucky and South Central Indiana said homeowners and store owners need to remember they have the right to say \u201cno\u201d to someone making what seems like an irresistible offer.<\/p>\n
Adkins said you should get at least three to four estimates before hiring someone, and always research the company or individual.<\/p>\n
Adkins also said contractors can get swept up in this scam.<\/p>\n
If contractors are overwhelmed with repair calls, they could subcontract a job. In some cases, less-ethical parties could tarnish a solid business\u2019 reputation .Adkins said it is always good to do your research first before you hire anyone you don’t know.<\/p>\n

Any business making repairs must be licensed
\nDo not pay for jobs in advance
\nBe cautious of contractors who demand full or half payment before work begins
\nGet a written, signed contract that lays out a price and detailed items
\nPay with a credit card if possible to give you more financial protection<\/p>\n
If you suspect there is also any price gouging or other issues, you can report the business to the BBB or your state attorney general\u2019s office.
