The five charged are part of the Department of Justice\u2019s 2025 \u2018National Health Care Fraud Takedown.\u2019<\/p>\n
Ashley Barnett, 41, of Louisville, Laura Webb, 37, of Springfield, and Rachel Goldstein, 43, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Kristina Coomer, 43, of Louisville, and Matthew Ryan Elkins, 40, of Crestwood, were all charged in the case.<\/p>\n
According to a release, Barnett and Webb, both veterinary doctors, are charged in a conspiracy to use DEA registration numbers issued to another. Additionally, Barnett and Goldstein are charged with conspiracy to obtain a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception, or subterfuge. They and others are accused of conspiring to prescribe over 25,000 Schedule II controlled substances in the names of some dead or fictitious dogs, but Barnett and Goldstein were allegedly keeping the substances for themselves.<\/p>\n
Additionally, Barnett is charged with theft of medical products for allegedly taking and concealing buprenorphine for her employer.<\/p>\n
Barnett and Goldstein are also charged with health care fraud. Barnett allegedly requested Goldstein fill her dextroamphetamine prescription and provide it to Barnett. Goldstein then allegedly caused the submission of the claim to Medicaid.<\/p>\n
Coomer, an employee of a retail pharmacy, was charged with theft of medical products, according to a release. She is accused of taking oxycodone from the pharmacy prior to the substance being made available for purchase.<\/p>\n
Elkins, a registered nurse anesthetist, is charged with tampering with consumer products, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit, and burglary involving controlled substances, according to a release. He is accused of tampering with a syringe that had fentanyl citrate and bupivacaine inside, replacing it with another liquid, taking three injectable vials partially containing fentanyl by deception, and entering a business registered with the DEA with the intent to steal materials.<\/p>\n
\u201cHealth care providers must be trusted to appropriately prescribe highly-addictive medications only to those in need. Doing otherwise only exacerbates the opioid epidemic that has ravaged our Commonwealth and destroyed families,\u201d U.S. Attorney Bumgarner said in a press release.<\/p>\n
All these cases will be tried in the U.S. Attorneys in the Western District of Kentucky. The investigation is ongoing.
